Change Part3 – What to CHANGE?

“To change is to think greater than how we feel. To change is to act greater than the familiar feelings of the memorized self.”
~ Dr. Joe. Dispenza

If I were to say the word “stuck” to you right now, what would it call to mind?
Being pinned in by traffic?
Boots slogging through mud?
Trying to force a button closed on your jeans after 11+ months of Covid? (just me?)

Or some of you might think about —
A job you dread going to
A relationship you know is over, but feel you can’t leave
Or it could be financial – that feeling of living paycheck to paycheck with no end in sight

But no matter what “stuck” is to you, it usually isn’t something that feels good. Just take a look at the situations above and I think you’ll agree, no?

And while we don’t always have a say in some of the things that change around us – i.e., whether or not it rains tomorrow, whether the person in the car in front of us misses the green light, or whether or not our kids like broccoli – we do have a say in SO many others.

So why then do SO many of us choose to stay in situations where we feel unhappy, unfulfilled, that we’re falling short of our true potential… or STUCK?

Well, here are just a few reasons why, and see if any of these ring true for you:

1. We fear that if we change, things might get worse.

If I stay right here, then at least I know what I’ve got. This is ironically called your “comfort zone.” I say, ironically, because it’s usually not at all comfortable. We become so used to that nagging feeling of “stuckness” that it becomes our new normal. The mind will tell us “it’s not that bad,” or even, “What’s the use?” And sometimes, it takes the universe tipping us on our heads until we agree to stop resisting and go along with the change that needs to happen. (And that’s when it usually becomes worse.)

2. We have a fear of success.

This one stumps a lot of people because at face value, you’d think — well who wouldn’t want to succeed? The truth of it is, that LOTS of people fall into this category. Just think about lottery winners who end up bankrupt within a few years of winning or celebrities who crash and burn at the height of their careers. But we mere mortals do this too – we stay where we are because we can’t possibly imagine ourselves any differently than how we are right now. Unconsciously we ponder – what would my friends and/or family think? Would I be able to handle success? Or the big one – I’ll be found out for being a “fraud.”

3. We have a fear of changing our story.

This one goes hand in hand with a fear of success. We wonder if we have to change the story of who we are… or of who we are to other people (our identity). We’ve become comfortable with being the one who’s “always broke,” who “is fine just as we are,” or who believes “those things” (and this could be education, money, or even happiness) are for other people, “not me/us.”

4. We’re patterned to use excuses.

Way back when, we figured out how to set the bar lower for ourselves… by way of excuses. “I don’t feel good so I can’t, Mom,” or “I’m too tired,” or “I forgot”… you see where this is going. Here’s the bottom line though — excuses are just one more form of resistance to change. Think about the excuses you might be using right now that are keeping you stuck. You may have a whole library of them if you think about it.

Take a minute to consider these areas of your life and see if you can identify any in which you feel stuck AND ones in which making a change—or getting unstuck – might be really good for you:

When you’re ready to work on ANY of these areas (or would like to just figure out if you need to), let’s connect!
Because here’s the thing — I’ve been there, and don’t know where I’d be without my coach today. Very recently in fact, I had been feeling extremely “stuck” in my own body — not 100% happy (or even 70 or 80%) with how I was feeling or my overall level of fitness, and that’s with practicing yoga everyday. Long story short, I called my coach, and within one conversation, I felt something within me shift… and that month, I lost five pounds.
So the bottom line is that getting stuck is universal. It happens to ALL of us.
And I would love to help you make your life a little less sticky.
